COURSE DESCRIPTION:

The Harold is the original Longform format, an improvised play in 3 acts. In this class, students will enhance their skills in scenework and stagecraft developed in Tier III courses and learn how to create coherent stories that stretch across longer sets. In addition to learning more about the structure of improvised theatre, students will develop characters and scenarios that can be repeated and explored throughout a show.

  • The big picture – A Harold's structure allows the team to follow full narratives or explore themes deeply over the course of the show, creating a consistent and impactful show.
  • Improv Roots – The Harold was originally developed in the 1960s and is the most ubiquitous longform format in the world. Many improv formats are based on the Harold as well as TV shows and movies that use the 3 storyline premise.
  • Can't be beat – You will learn about beated improv structures, and how to reinvest in the characters, world, or themes of a scene.
  • Build connections - The Harold is made to develop strong characters and stories and then find the links between them, pushing your creativity as well as the audience's.

Important Information:

  • A deposit is required to complete your registration. Full payment is due on the first day of class, except in the case of students paying in installments, who will make payments at the 1st, 3rd, 5th, 7th and 9th classes. We do not pro-rate classes. Every student pays the same tuition regardless of attendance.
  • Signing up is a committment to taking all 10 classes and there are no make up classes. Please inform the teacher if you are unable to attend a class or are arriving late.
  • Class sizes are kept small so as to ensure everyone has maximum opportunity to perform, practice, and get personal feedback with the teacher. With such limited spaces, it’s a good idea to sign up below as soon as possible or inquire about availability.
  • Students who miss 2 or more classes will be allowed to finish the class, but their performance in the graduation show will be at the discretion of the instructor.
