Introduction to Longform Improvisation
Starting on Thursday, April 27th, B.I.G. School of Improv will be offering the following class. Students must have completed a Level 2 Improv course here or elsewhere, and if not, must audition for the course. If you wish to take it, please read the class dates and reserve your space.
INTRODUCTION TO LONGFORM IMPROVISATION
Longform improvisation is a style of theatre born out of the tradition of commedia dell’arte where entire plays are composed on the spot by the performers themselves. These free, creative, cooperative plays are unscripted and unrepeatable, and you can learn how to do it. In this introductory class, improvisers will learn how to create relationships on stage, communicate and connect, and craft stories with purpose, depth, and humor based on nothing more than a suggested word. Previous experience and approval from the instructor are required.
This is a special 8-week course, taught by BIG instructor Jeremie Day Glider, designed to get already competent improvisers acquainted with – and skilled at – a more challenging and rewarding form of Improv. Students applying to this class must have taken Level 2 – Shortform Games Intensive or must audition for the class. Please inquire on the form below if you would like to set up an audition.
- High Drama – In a longform piece, you are creating a half hour play with more depth than a typical 3 minute improv game. Create plays with a variety of emotional experiences for your characters and the audience.
- Cooperation – There is no MC. There is no set list. You will work together as a group to decide how your play flows, who is in each scene, where the story goes- all in the moment, with no pre-planning.
- Challenge – This is the real “acting without a net” that improvisation purports to be. This roller coaster does not stop until the end. You’ll learn the skills you need to navigate this art form that is truly limitless.
- Exploration – Improvisation is life. Improvisation skills are life skills. The improvements you you feel you need in life (e.g. to be a better listener, to share your emotions, to be more honest) are things you can work out through longform improvisation. Our goal is to expose our humanity, and you will learn about yourself as you practice.
Price and Class Size
Introduction to Longform Improvisation costs €160 if you choose to pay in instalments, or €140 if you pay in full at the first class.
We’re keeping the class size small so that everyone has the maximum opportunity to perform, practice, and get personal feedback with the teacher – the maximum class size is 12. With such limited spaces, it’s a good idea to sign up below as soon as possible or inquire about availability.
If you sign up, that means that you are committed to take all 8 classes. Please inform the teacher if you will be unable to attend a class or if you are coming late. There are no make up classes. If you are paying via a payment plan, you need to bring cash to pay in installments at the 1st, 3rd, 5th and 7th classes. We do not pro-rate classes. Every student pays the same tuition regardless of attendance.
