Advanced Shortform

This course is not available this term. Please visit to see what is on offer for Winter 2017.

Starting on Tuesday, January 19th, B.I.G. will be offering the following class. Students must have completed a Level 2 Improv course here or elsewhere, and if not, must audition for the course. If you wish to take it, please read the class dates and reserve your space.

Advanced Shortform is a class designed for students who already have a good understanding of the ins and outs of improv and how to get a laugh from a crowd. The aim of this course is to make you analyse your own skills and to find new ways to improve your stage characters and scenes. The course also introduces scene editing, MCing, and challenging your scene partners into bolder choices, while playing some of the most technical and impressive improvisation games we know. Completion of Short Form Games Intensive or instructor approval are required.

This is a special 8-week course, taught by BIG instructor Matthew Watson Jones, designed to sharpen the skills of the short form improviser and give students the skills to run their own show!

The 2.5-hour classes will run on Tuesday evenings from 7.00pm to 9.30pm.

BIG Instructor Matt Watson Jones

  • Perform some of the most demanding improvisation games and challenge yourself and your scene partners to make bold choices.
  • Learn how to MC, introduce casts and games succinctly, and bring some showmanship to your show.
  • Learn to edit your own games, controlling the pace and flow of an improv game and feeling when it’s best to call “Scene!”
  • Find your own areas for growth and take your skills to the next level.
  • Create memorable characters in 5 seconds who continue to grow on stage over 5 minutes.

Price and Class Size

Advanced Shortform costs €160 if you choose to pay in installments, or €140 if you pay in full at the first class. Students must pay a €10 deposit to confirm their interest in the course.

We’re keeping the class size small so that everyone has the maximum opportunity to perform, practice, and get personal feedback with the teacher – the maximum class size is 12. With such limited spaces, it’s a good idea to get in touch with us as soon as possible to enquire about availability.

If you sign up, that means that you are committed to take all 8 classes. Please inform the teacher if you will be unable to attend a class or if you are coming late. There are no make-up classes. If you are paying via a payment plan, you need to bring cash to pay in installments at the 1st, 3rd, 5th and 7th classes.
